Examples: you're the talk-in for Field Day & you're also operating HF. I show them together here because many 857 owners are familiar with with the size of the z817. (Note: The z817 is not compatible with the FT-857. Even if you have a 'shack in a box' radio that covers all bands DC to light, you are likely to want a separate VHF radio for local conversations while also working distant contacts. The Yaesu FT-857 is a more powerful radio (100W) thats still suitable for manpack operations, and it also fits in the Evac insert with the LDG z817 tuner.

The first is if you already have or are studying for your general level. There are many questions to be asked and answered to help you pick a radio.

However it adds 100W out, USB soundcard built in, and Yaesu's digital mode called Fusion. Low power output radios usually are very frustrating for new hams because you can hear but often can't be heard.įT-991 is also an all mode radio from 160M-70cm. It if for ham radio operators that have figured out antennas, and either digital or CW modes, already. Lots of good information on using it in the field if you search.

View QuoteFT-818 is an update to the FT-817nd. So if some rare dx comes in on 20m FT8 no chatting it up on the repeater and working HF at the same time which is very common within my club. Many folks in my area dont care much for designs like this due too you can only work one band/mode at a time. Many refer to it as a shack in the box as it covers everything. The 991a is a great radio has also been out for a few years. They are extremely limited in filtering which you will need on HF bands for a more enjoyable experience. I have seen them available used on QTH for $300 but the vast majority will be higher than that. The 817/818 is a old design and maybe discontinued now. Units such as this are low power and give you just enough to get on the air will off grid. Whether it be POTA( Parks on the Air) SOTA (Summits on the Air) Or IOTA (Islands on the air). Its primary market is for guys/gals to get out into nature and do radio.

The 817/818 is a field portable all mode radio. In summary, if you can find one cheap it's a good little portable radio to have in the stable - but if it's your first radio, or only radio, there are probably better choices. If I was going for an HF only backpack portable radio I would probably buy a Lab599 TX-500 (if they were ever in stock!) as they are smaller, lighter, and are very energy efficient - but you're still missing 2m/70cm. The modern equivalent is the Icom IC-705 which I now own, which is far and beyond a better radio, but it also costs about 2-3 times as much. Heavy, old design, underpowered, pretty durable, jack of all trades master of none. To use a motorcycle analogy it's kinda like the KLR 650 of the radio world. My very first HF contact was made with a FT-817 running off of AA batteries and a makeshift 20m speaker wire dipole sitting next to a mountain stream - I was hooked! With that radio I talked to just about every US state, and probably 20 different countries around the world using SSB and 5 watts or less. The filtering does suck, but if you're up in the mountains away from local RFI it's not a big deal. You can run them off AA batteries, internal rechargeable battery, or external power supply. The size of the radio is about like a hardback novel, so they're easy to take on trips, or camping or whatever. You can consistently find a used one in very good condition for around $400. Paul Island (1) St.The FT-817/FT-818 is a rather outdated design, but for the price (used) they're still a decent little all mode, all band radio. 630m (1) Aeronautical Mobile (1) Antarctica (10) Antennas (7) Awards (2) Beacons (2) Boudewijn Büch (1) Bouvet Island (2) British Antarctic Survey (1) Canada C3 Expedition (4) Contesting (2) CW (4) Cycling the Globe (1) DXCC (6) EME Moonbounce (2) Falkland Islands (1) Field Radio (1) Franz Josef Land (1) FT8 (2) HAARP (4) High Altitude Ballooning (6) Homebrewing (7) Iceland (1) IOTA (13) K1NSS Design (2) Kon Tiki expedition (2) Magic Band 6m (3) MegActiv MA305FT (2) Mont Blanc (3) Mount Athos (3) Mountain Topper (1) National NC-183D (1) Pitcairn Island (2) Pixie (3) Polar Regions (17) QRP (7) QRP Labs U3B (2) QRP Labs U3S (22) QRP online shopping (1) QRSS (3) QSL cards (17) Radio Propagation (9) RSS James Clark Ross (2) Russian Arctic (1) RV Polarstern (1) SAQ Grimeton Radio (1) Science (5) SDR (3) SDRPlay RSP1A (5) SOTA (8) Sporadic E (3) Sputnik-1 (1) St.
